How to get Google to Index your New Website or Blog

I was asked by a client to ensure that their new blog was indexed by Google quickly as it was a timely piece and so I thought I would share how to do submit blogs or articles to search engines.  Before doing this, please make sure your blog or website is indexable  by search engines by ensuring that your robots.txt is not blocking the page from being indexed and that content is actually on the page and not on images.  Remember search engines cannot read images, they can only read image captions or <alt> tags.  After you have submitted your site, you can check if your site has been indexed by using the google site operator.  Simple type on the search field:  “site:www.yourdomain.com yourdomain.com” — Google should be able to present you with the no. of pages that they have indexed on your website.

How to submit your URL to Google:  https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url
How to submit your URL to Bing:  http://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url
I have some reservations in this procedure though because Google prefers to find your website through links from other websites and / or reputable directories instead of a url-submit.  But this process shouldn’t hurt and is an easy way to make sure that Google and Bing will indeed find your site.  If you are serious about your Search Engine visibility, I would suggest submitting it to reputable and relevant directories first before submitting it to the Search Engines.  Good Luck!  As always our initial consultation is always free so please contact us if you have any questions about this blog / optimization.
